Kids for the Cure

Our team is walking to create a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D).

When you have T1D, your pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone essential to turning food into energy. This means you must constantly monitor your blood-sugar level, administer insulin, and carefully balance these insulin doses with your eating and activity just to stay alive. If you don't, you risk mood swings, head or stomach aches, hospitalization, comas, seizures, loss of feeling in your body parts, organ failure, and death. 

With T1D there are no days off and there is no cure. You have to monitor and track your health every day, whether it is rainy or sunny, whether you are happy or sad, and no matter what else is happening in your life.

The cost of T1D has risen exponentially in the past couple decades. With insurance, the cost of maintaining this disease (with just the necessities to stay alive) is roughly $400 a month. Without insurance, that cost rises to a staggering $1491.57 a month (again, just for the necessary medications and tools to stay alive every day).
